A serious accident happened yesterday at the Oakley colliery, Lithgow. A “bucket containing a number of miners was ascending to the mouth of the pit, when by some mishap it struck against the shaft, and three of the men were thrown out of the “ bucket by the force of the collision, and precipitated a distance of 40ft to the bottom of the pit. All had either legs or arms broken, and oneman is not expected to recover from the injuries. Fortunately the accident happened when only ashort distance of the journey to the mouth of the pit was accomplished, or those who were thrown from the “ bucket 1 must have been instantaneously killed. Judge Windeyer and the Minister of Justice are reviewing the evidence given at the Mount Rennie trial. This course is adopted in consequence of the repeated statements to the effect that the wrong prisoners were convicted, and some of them executed. In answer to a deputation regarding a proposal to establish a direct steam service to the New Hebrides, Sir Henry Farkes said that the efforts already made in that direction had proved of no avail in consequence of Victoria refusing to join in subsidising such a service. The New- South W ales Government would now consider the question apart from the prospect of obtaining the co-operation of the other colonies. The Centennial Rille meeting takes place next week. All the colonies will be re-prei-'-nted save New Zealand, and L 2,400 will lie offered in prize money and trophies. The French war vessel Duchauflet has a died from Sydney for France. It is stated at Newcastle that thirty vessels are on their way from San Francisco for that port in ballast for coal cargoes. Freights are exceedingly high, from 24s to 25s being offered for vessels thither.
