SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

A Press Association telegram from Melbourne states that nine New Zealand-bred horses are in training there for engagements at the V.R.C. meeting. Trenton is not working well, but Spade Guinea an 1 Enfilade are in excellent trim.

A jockey was killed at the Launceston races yesterday. Quibble was yesterday backed for a good stake for the Dunedin Cup, and is now quoted at 4 to 1, DUNEDIN CUP. During the latter part of this week Quibble has been in great demand, and Snapshot has been persistently nibbled at. Prices vary so much that it is difficult to state what is the real position of the betting market, but the following may be taken as the odds based on legitimate transactions 3 to 1 agst Gipsy King 4 1 Quibble 6 1 Snapshot 7 1 Beresford, Torrent, and Ruby 8 1 Artillery, Telford, and Springston 10 1 Hermitage 12 1J First Lord, Apropos, and Lady Norah 14_1 St Clair and Silver Mark : 20 1 Captain Cook and The Brewer 50 1 Wildrako. CUP AND PUBLICAN’S, 100 to 6 on the field. Acceptances are due for the Hurdle Race to-night, and the double—Cupand Hurdles—is then certain to be in demand. TRAINING AT THE FORBURY. A few strong gallops were witnessed by those who faced the inclement weather this morning. The first spin of importance was between St. Clair and Captain Cook, these Cup horses doiug a mile and a half together as fast as they could go, and finishing pretty well together ; but of the two Captain Cook seemed to have the advantage, although he had the bigger weight'on his back. Apropos had a first-class spin for the same distance, with Little Nell for a mate at the finish. The Cup mare went very well indeed. Silver Mark was sent for a fast spin over the Publicans’ Handicap course, aud La Rose had a similar task. These horses' are in capital condition, anc] move like racers. Tetford and Cindereljd merely cantered on the outside of the tab, but they do not require much fast work. Aprils Moi had the Gitana gelding for a companion in a medium-pace spin over six furlongs. Lady Constance was sent with Dispute the same distance, the colt having much the best of the gallop. Dunluce, Shifnal, Garibaldi, and other horsei present cantered slowly. All training here appear to be doing well. . t 1 Pegasds,
