VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
The North Dunedin Rifles on Friday morning fired the first competition for the prize presented by Mr W, Dawson. This prize is to be decided by points ; the first to gain 21 or over to be the winner of the trophy. The ranges arc 200, 500, and 600 yards ; seven shots at each distance. The shooting, especially at the _ long ranges, was rendered very difficult owing to the had light, together with occasional thick showers of rain. The following are the highest scores :
The Dunedin Rifle Club held their third competition for a gold medal on Saturday afternoon at their range, Mornington. The conditions were seven shots at 200 yards, 500 yards, and 600 yards. The weather was very unfavorable for shooting owing to the dull, changeable light and strong gusty wind. Subjoined are the scorers who made
A meeting was held after the competition, when it was resolved that Kynoch’s ammunition be used in all competitions for prizes and medals : that Saturday, the 25th February, 24th March, and 25th April be the three dates for medal competitions. The secretary was instructed to challenge tho Rortobcllo Rifle Club for a friendly match on Saturday, the 11th February ; conditions to he ten men a-side, seven shots at 200 and 500 • yards. A friendly match was fired on Saturday afternoon between teams representing the Wakari and Dunedin Highland Rifles on the range of the latter company. The conditions of the match were : Ten men a-side; ranees 200, 300, and 500 yards ; seven shots at each distance. The match proved most exciting throughout, the Wakari ultimately winning by 34 points. The scores were very good considering the very baffling wind, which continued during the match. Credit is due to Private Dalziel and Color-sergeant Pattisoa (captains of the teams) for the manner in which they placed their men and attended to the shooting in general. After the finish of the match Color-sergeants Sonntag and Pattison addressed the men, and with three good Highland cheers the teams separated, to meet shortly in the return match, which will bo fired on the Wakari range. PTOn Saturday a friendly rifle match was fired on the Cavereham range between the
Hillside Workshops Rifle Club and Caversham Rifles. Seven men a-side. Ranges, 200, 400, and 500 yards ; five shots at each range. The Club won by ‘2B points. Scores:
The Southland Rifle Association have decided to hold a meeting at Easter, commencing on April 3. A programme has been drawn up, comprising six matches, with prize-money amounting to LBO, exclusive of trophies and the Association’s medals.
