Thirty cases were set down for hearing at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, but all excepting tlirce were disposed of without troubling the Magistrate. William Lewis was found dead in the Botanical Gardens at Napier on Saturday. It is evidently a case'of suicide, as a revolver was clutched in the right hand, and deceased had a bullet wound in the right temple. Monetary troubles are supposed to be the cause. He had been drinking for some time past.

At the City Court to-day the fining of Thomas Jerome in the sum of 40s, in default seven days’ imprisonment, for drunkenness, was the only business transacted. Messrs A. Mercer and W, Hutchison were the presiding Justices. There is every prospect of a keen contest for the vacAnt seat in Leith Ward. Mr Charles Haynes, who has considerable experience in municipal matters, having been Mayor of Palmerston and served in the Municipal Council there for some time, is already announced as a candidate, as is Mr C. R. Chapman. We also hear that Messrs John Barnes, W. Swan, and Cohen will be candidates.

The jubilee of the planting of the Roman Catholic faith in New Zealand by Bishop Pompalier, first Bishop of Auckland, was celebrated at Auckland yesterday, when Pontifical high mass was offered in St. Patrick’s Cathedral by Bishop Luck. There were crowded congregations at both morning and evening services, and the cathedral was effectively decorated. The Solicitor-General has given an opinion that payment of thirds can be made by the Government to special settlemcntson account of works they may have carried out, or are carrying out, providing such associations appoint a secretary to receive and payaway the money for such purposes ; but in future all works must bo carried out by county councils or road boards.

The Greenwood family gave their final entertainment at the Princess’s Theatre on Saturday night, but the attendance was very meagre. The programme was, however, spiritelly gone through, and Messrs Umbers and Jones lent their assistance, Mr Jago being unable to putin an appearance through his inability to reach town in time. The Family appear at the Port to-night and to-morrow evening.

With respect to the claim of certain Legislative Councillors residing in Wellington for L 25 expenses under thc^ Parliamentary Honorarium Act of last session, Mr Downie Stewart is satisfied, from the wording of the Act, that the provision to subsection 2 applies only to members of the House of Representatives. The words in question do not grant anything, but restrict the vote for expenses to members of the “ General Assembly,” which clearly means, in the sense in which it is used, members of the House of Representatives.

Pastor George M filler inaugurated his services in Dunedin yesterday, _ when he preached to large congregations in the First Church and Garrison Hall, morning and evening respectively. His evening subject was “ Faith,” as shown in Hebrews xi., 7, and in an interesting sermon referred largely to personal experiences. In connection with his meetings during this week, Mr Muller said that, in compliance with request, he would moke lengthy reference in his address at Knox Church on Wednesday evening to the orphanages at Ashley Downs. A young man named Astley attempted suicide at Hawera on Saturday. He was a passenger from Wanganui by train, and immediately on his arrival at Hawera he was arrested on a charge of obtaining money in Wanganui under false pretences. On being arrested he asked permission of the police to visit the urinal. Ho was allowed to do so, and at once shot himself in the left breast, evidently having aimed at his heart. The ball entered below the heart, and travelled round to the back. It is not yet known whether his life will be saved. On the Clyde over 60,000 tons of shipping had been booked on December 3, and there was a confident expectation that some important additional orders would be obtained before the close of the year. In the north-east of England also, on the Tyne and the Wear and the Tees, the winter would be entered upon with much brighter prospects than was the case last year, The Palmer Iron and Shipbuilding Company (Limited), at Barrow, had some large contracts on hand, which were expected to give a fair amount of employment to the population of Barrow during the winter. The upward tendency of freights, especially on outward voyages, had no doubt stimulated the recent orders for new shipping, and what was rather remarkable was the scarcity of sailing tonnage which is now experienced at some ports. The prospect of an increased business in shipbuilding had its influence on iron and steel markets, and prices had advanced slightly.

An immense supply of school books, school slates, school requisites, exercise books; also boys’ and girls’ high schools and university books have just been opened at Braithwaite’s Book Arcade, the cheapest and largest book warehouse in New Zealand, — [Advt.] Although the required number of passengers for a third trip to the Sounds has not yet been booked, it is anticipated that the next couple of days will see the complement made up, and in that event the Company purpose despatching the Tarawera for the Sounds on Thursday next, 2nd prox. We arc requested to draw attention to the sale by auction to-morrow, by Mr Donald Stronach, of about nine acres of excellent land at Sawyers Fay. When the movement for the establishment of a second refrigerating company was begun, this piece of land, owing to its being so near to Port, facing the railway line, and having a permanent stream of water running through it, was bought as being the most suitable about Dunedin for such a purpose. As the Company intend to wind up, the land is now for sale.

The Australian Mutual Provident Society’s handsome building at the intersection of Dowling and Princes streets, which is fast approaching completion, is to be rendered more attractive by the addition of a beautiful group of figures to the top-frout. The group was imported and manufactured by Mr Munro, sculptor, of this City, and was turned out of his studio at Carrara, Italy. It is the largest piece of figure sculpture that has ever been brought to New Zealand, being a few inches higher than the Burns statue, and is entirely made of marble. The centre figure, that of a woman, stands Oft 6in high, and there are two smaller figures in a kneeling position. The hoisting of the figures is to be begun immediately.

The rehearsals of 1 Lcs Cloches de Corneville’ are being pushed on vigorously, the company having now transferred themselves to the Princess’s Theatre, where the remainder of the rehearsals take place. The promoters have made a wise choice in the opera selected for production, being replete as it is from the opening of the first act to the finale in the third with the most charmiug music and witty dialogue. At the same time, a more difficult one could scarcely have been hit upon, the cast of characters requiring not only good vocalists but more than average actors ; the parts of Gispard (the miser) and the Baillie standing out prominently in this respect. The first mentioned will be undertaken by Mr Densem, who so successfully impersonated Sir Joseph Porter in ‘ Pinafore,’ and, from what we know of his histrionic ability, we have no hesitation in saying that ho will give a representation second to none, and superior to many of the professionals who have figured in it here

The part of the Bailie is in the bands of Mr Young, who showed us a taste of his quality as the sergeant of police in tho ‘Pirates.’ More scope is, however, afforded him as the Bailie of displaying to full advantage those low comedy powers wc know him to ho possessed <•( The remainder of tho cast is : Henri, Marquis De Cornevillo, Sir H. B. Smith ; tiobo, the Bailie’s shadow, Mr F, F. M'Carthy; Grcnicheux, Mr Blinkinsopp Christopher, Mr Max, Newbury ; Scrpollettc, Mrs Murphy ; Germain, Mrs Wm. Angus. The opening date of the opera has been fixed for Monday, February 13.
