Ejunlop is now first favorite for the Anniversary Handicap, of 2,000 sovs, one mile and three-quarters, to be run at Sydney to-day; but the betting is slack, as it has been all along. At Lake Forsyth yesterday the races held over from the previous day were decided. The Champion Fours resulted in an easy win for Canterbury by six lengths. Wellington was second, the Union third, Cure fourth, and Star fifth. The contest between the last four boats was very keen. Welcome Jack has been purchased by Mr W. J. Dangar, of New South Wales, for 315 guineas. The Auckland correspondent of the * Canterbury Times ’ wires that the Steeplechase at the Plumpton Park races on Saturday resulted in a chapter of accidents. Falcon, who was made a hot favorite, fell at the stone wall, throwing Eae heavily. Wideawake, Coral, and Monitor, stuck up, and when racing in the straight Torpedo broke down so badly that he was unable to finish. It was generally believed that when the steeplechaser Huntsman had been relegated to duty between the shafts a month or two back his racing days had ended; but such was not the case, for he turned up at the Plumpton meeting, and, to the suprise of almost everyone, appropriated the Steeplechase. The old chaser really Eut in a fortnight in one of the suburban usses rUn last month, but going a bit sore, his owner decided on giving him a rest. Jimmy Kean espied the old horse in a paddock, and, after inquiring about him, closed for his purchase for L3O. In the plight he was in, Kean had not the remotest hope of his winning on Saturday, and all that he had on him was “ five bob.” Mr J. Lennard, the well-known horse owner, has had to file a petition of insolvency, which has been chiefly brought about by large losses in business and having to pay extortionate rents. Quotations on the Dunedin Cup do not appear to have settled down to any steady rate. At Auckland Gipsy King is a warm favorite at 3 to 1, while the Canterbury * Times ’ gives the following as the position of the Christchurch betting market; — There Is still very little wagering in connection with the Dunedin Cup. There was a commission last week to back Snapshot, and three or four hundreds were booked at 100 to 12. Gipsy King has received some attention, and has been backed at 100 to 20, but that price is still on offer. Hermitage has been supported at 100’s to 10, and there have been inquiries for Wildrake, Sprlngston, and Artillery, but little business has resulted. The following are the prices now on offer Dunedin Cop. 4 to 1 agst Nelson. 6 1 Gipsy King. 6 1 Artillery. 7 1 Snapshot and Ruby. 8 1 Tetford, Lady Norah, First Lord, and Sprlngston. 10 —1 Quibble, Beresford, Hermitage, St. Clair, Torrent, and Captain Cook. 12 1 Apropos and Silver Mark. 16 _ 1 The Brewer and Wildrake. Cop and Poblioans’. 100 to fi on (be field.

There is little fresh to report from the training tracks at Riccarton. Of the Dunedin Cup horses, Ruby and Springston have put in a lot of good work, and Torrent, although making a great noise, performed a very fair gallop on Wednesday morning. Artillery begins in very cramped style, and does not yet look quite himself. Carbine, Ravenswing, Adulation, Manton, Chain Shot, and Son-of-a-Gun are looking the best of the two-year-olds. Thunderbolt is doing well at Flemington, and his party anticipate his playing a prominent part in the Newmarket Handicap.

Mr Wyllie played eight gn»n9,) on Wednesday at Mosgiel, and won I. .in all. tic is now playing at Webb’s Buckeye Hotel, West Taieri. . In our advertising columns Dick Bins challenges Williams or any other middleweight in Dunedin to box.
