CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.
The following reports will be submitted at to inorrow'B meeting of the City Council: The Town Clerk reports that the valuation of rateable property in the City for the year 188S-89 has been completed by Mr J. Morris (City Valuator). The total for the general rate purposes amounts t0L2G5,054, as against L 279.568 last year, being a decrease of L 14.514, which last includes the Crown property (L 3.798), no longer rateable. The general rate (Is in the £) in 18S7 88, produced L 1.3,978, and will, in the ensuing year, produce L 13.252 143, showing a decrease of L 725 14s. The VVorks Committee report recomendinpr, inter alia, that the Council appoint two duly qualified medical practitioners to inspect and report on the sanitary condition of dwellings in the neighborhood of Walker street, represented in the petition, John Garden and others, as being unfit for habitation.—The Surveyor has been instructed to attend to the Tramway Company's complaint as to the bad time kept by the Colonial Bank clock. The Reserves Committee recommend inter alia that permission be granted for the widening of the Pelichet Bay rifle range, and for the formation of a footpath, bo as to extend the range from 600 to 1,300 yards.—That Mr Langlands be allowed to occupy allotment 12, subdivision of cattle market reserve, at an annual rental of L 4 per annum.—Mr F. GresswelPs offer, for a client, to lease the Corporation premises in Manse street, at L 52 10s per annum, has been declined, but he has been informed that the Committee are willing to recommend the acceptance of an offer of LIOO per annum. The General Committee report that they have no recommendation to make re the establishment of a market for the sale of produce, seeing that previous market buildings in the City have not been successful, and that a site at the Triangle already dovoted to market purposes has not been availed of. The Gas Supply Committee recommend that L 5 be granted to R. Edwards in satisfaction of his claim for compensation for injury alleged to have been sustained by him in consequence of a leak in the Cumberland street gas-main. The Finance Committee specially direct the attention of the Council to the fact that the Public Works Committee will have exceeded the estimated expenditure on works for the year ending March 31, 1888, by the sum of L 782 3s 9d, and recommend the Council to instruct the Works Committee to expend no further money, except on works already authorised, during the current financial year.
