FATALITIES.

In the Hack Race at Ahaura yesterday, Fairy, with R. Barton riding, fell when live or six chains from the starting-post. Barton was in tho act of remounting (having hold of the bridle), when another horse came up and knocked him over. He was seen to roll over, but never rose afterwards. After being carried to the booth he remained unconscious for some time, but after a while he spoko. Death ensued four hours afterwards. Deceased was a resident of Hokitika, and leaves a wife and family. Charles R. Cooper, one of a party of prospectors who left Riverton for Preservation Inlet six weeks ago, was washed overboard from the boat and drowned,
