Thebfirq'ie Johann Carl broke bulk this morning, and oommenoed dleohirglng oargo. The barque Helen Donny ha? about 100 tonsrf dead weight oarpo to p'lt out. The steamers Penguin, for Northern ports, and Grnfton, for the West Coast, sailed this afternoon. The barque Salado Was towed to sea this afternoon, and Balled with original oargo for Lyttelton, Mr M'Conachy, of Fort Glafgow, has patented an Invention whereby the gangways wblob span the spaces between the poop, deck-houses, and forecastle of a ship can be admirably adapted as llfe.tavlng appliances tn o&se of disaster at flea. Messrs Robert Duncan and Co., Port Glasgow, far Messrs Thorn and Cameron, Gla'gow, are just finishing ft la*«e sailing ship, the Oceana, for Mr R. H. Paterson, Greenock, and these patent gansways f'rm part of the deok fittings of this efficiently equipped vessel. In order to test the appliance trior u inly, the inventor (VTr M'Gonachy) recently had two of thepp gangways (which are 18ft lorg) placed In the water side by side, about 2ft apirt, and conneoted by cross rods of Iron at extremities—the space between the ga-gways being covered by a plank the same length—thus constituting a, raft 18ft In length hy Bft broad. Each gangway U fitted with threo rowlocks on each side, so that when two are placed In position In the maDnor a*-ovc described the raft can be rowed with six oars It wan manned by six rowers, with Mr M'Conachy and one of the builders of the Oceana steering, which was very easily and effectively done by means of an oar. They set out from Port Glasgow, and rowed to the Tail of the Dink, sailing rcund the vessels of tho Channel Fleet, mid causing a considerable sensition amongst the sallo'B and visitors, who seemed to take tome interest in the novel craft as it gli led swiftiy along from one vessel to another. On returning from the trni°e the raft was taken asunder, and the gangways which formed it were placed in thiir respective positions—on hoard the Oceana to

span the spaces between the deck erections, and serve the purpose of bridges for officers and crew. They are fixed in their places by means of slip-bolts, which, in ca«e of i cin in an instant be withdrawn, thus f oeing the gangway, and making It available as a life-saving raft. A patent has been granted at Home f >r an adjustable keel for ocean steamers, whereby, it is claimed, such stemers may navigate rivers without in any unnner diminishing their strongth or security in ocean voyages. Thi3 new device is de«cr.brd as follows:—The moveable keel is situated in the centre of the hull, and consists of abeam extending tbe entiro length of the ship, and connected with upright posts, which move vertically in cylinders. These cylinders are securely fastened to and supported in the centre of tho main hall, and project to such a distance upwards as to have their upper open ends at an elevation above the level of the water, in order to prevent an inflow into the hu'l. It is claimed that this vessel can reach all the rivet cities and interior points and communicate directly with foreign countries without transfer of freight or Incurring additional expense.
