SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.
An Auckland telegram states that the Robinson Crusoe —Radiance colt purchased by Mr D. O'Brien at the New Zealand Stud Company's sale for 280 guineas, was resold yesterday to Mr W. Bobbett, of the Thames, for 300 guineas. The boxiDg contest for LSO a-side and the championship between Laing and Matthews was fought at Wanganui last bight at the Drill Hall before an audience numbering about 500; the prices of admission being five shillings and ten shillings. Considerable delay took place before the_ fight commenced owing to Laing objecting to Mr Reilly acting as referee. It was ultimately decided to have a referee and judges, C. H. Chavannes being referee, and Messrs Thatcher and Dwyer acting as judges for Laing and Matthews respectively. Matthews was slightly the favorite. The first round was spent in sparring, but in the early part of the second Laing hit Matthews a heavy blow under the jaw which felled him, and from which he never thoroughly recovered. The fight from this was virtually over. Notwithstanding Matthews's gameness in coming to the scratch every time, he could not bear up against thf, heavy punishment tnat Laing frequently administered, and at the conclusion of the fourth round lie was unable to continue, and the championship was awarded to Laing.
