CITY POLICE COJRT.
(Before Messrs E. H. Carew, R.M., and G. E. Eliott, J.P.) Malicious Injuky to Property.— George Morrison was charged with having last night damaged a fence the property of William Marsden. Defendant, who was slightly under the influence of drink at the time, was seen by the constable to pull a picket from off the fence. When the constable appeared accused hid the picket behind a post. Numerous complaints have been made lately to the police of like damage having been done to fences in different parts of the City.—The Bench informed the accused *hat he had rendered himself liable to a fine not exceeding L 5, and cautioned him that for a second offence he was liable to be sent to prison for twelve months, with hard labor. Defendant was fined 10s and coats, and ordered to pay the damage done to the fence, viz., Is, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Breach of the Employment of Females and others Act.— Ephraim Ellis was charged <vith employing Louis M'Connell (ten years), contrary to the Employment of the Females and others Aet.—lnspector Hanson gave evidence as to finding the lad employed in rag-pinking on two occasions. The charge was brought against the defen dant for employing a boy under twelve years of age, as required by the Act.—The defendant admitted that he had done bo unthinkingly, and more out of charity. The father of the boy (who had a large family) had pressed him very hard to give the boy something to do.—The Bench quite believed defendant's story, but reminded him that he was liable to a fine of LSO. Defendant would be fined 10s and costs.
Adjournments.—The following cases were adjourned :—Stewart Peters, unlawfully selling poisonß (Prof. Black not being able to be present), was adjourned until the 19th. Alice Powell against Thomas Powell, for wife support, was also adjourned until the 19th. Tho case against John Ward, for failing to support the illegitimate child of Eliza Mullin, was adjourned until next Thursday,
