VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

On New Year's Day a friendly rifle match was fired at Lawrence between the Dunedin City Guards and Tuapeka Rifles. The Guards team left town by the South express, and on arrival were met by the officers and members of the country corps, and immediately proceeded to the range, where refreshments had kindly been prepared for the visitors by a number of ladies. The shooting of both corpß was very poor, owing to the intense heat and the length of time it took to complete the match—the last men not having fired until after eight o'clock. Each team comprised thirteen men, and seven shots, with one sighting shot, was fired at 200, 300, and 500 yards. The follow-
