FIRES.

A new five-roomed wooden building in Medway street, Gore, was destroyed on Tuesday morning, together with a stable adjoining. The building was owned and occupied as a residence and millinery store by Mr Williamson, formerly of Queenstown, and the stable was the property of Mr T, Ambrose. The store, house, and stock were insured for L 485 in the South British Office, but Mr Ambrose had no insurance on his stable.

The house of Mrs Mary O’Connell, Franklin road, Auckland, was discovered to be on fire last night. The flames were suppressed by the neighbors, who found the doors and windows all securely fastened, and two separate fires started with rubbish, saturated with kerosene, and the furniture all removed. Mrs O’Connell was near the house when the fire was first observed, but went away, refusing to give up the keys. She declined to give information as to the insurance, and said that somebody must have stolen her furniture and set fire to the house.

Shortly after one o’clock this morning a fire was discovered in the shop and dwelling occupied by Mr B. Krull, his wife and child, in King street, between Albany and Frederick streets; but the alarm being promptly given, the flame was subdued before much damage was done, the injury to the building being estimated atjabout LiO, and to the effects at between L 5 and LIO, though this is not the entire loss, as some of the furniture was damaged by the hurried removal. The fire is supposed to have been caused by the gas in the rear of the shop igniting the wainscoting. There is no insurance over Mr B. Krull’s stock and furniture. The building is the property of Mrs Victoria Krull.
