~HR» ' Harbor- Board' met- -thisr afternoon*; present—Messrs J. B. Thomson (in the chair), Fulton, Adam?, Hialop, Maokerras, BeJd,l*w, A. Thomron, and Wales. Leave of absence was granted to Sir B. B. Cargo! during a visit that he is making to Australia.
Tenders for mak'ng the approach to the tongrewhar' were opened and referred to the Engioesr. ; A letter was received from the Union Steam Ship Company expressing regret that portion of the coal landed ex Mawhera remained on the wharf somewhat beyond the usual time, and stating that the detention arose through a misunderstanding with the Gasworks. The eoal has now been put on board the Company's steamers, being intended for their nee, and under the circumstances the Company pre* rattled that the Board would not insist on dues being paid.-The rebate asked for was granted. The Finance Committee reported having P"*™ accounts amounting to L3.08614s 2i-Adopted. « T £ e Y m) ? Uwnnnttee reported as follows: (1) Tenders for sheds on tongue wharf: Messrs E. S. Sparrow and Co.»s tender, being lowest sod in order (LBBS 2s 6d\ has been accepted. (21 Annual supplies: Cartage, schedule rates,'J. Duthie and Co.; timber, do, Findlay and Co.; ironmoßgery, do, A. Briscoe and Co.; repairs to dredges, do, A. and T. Burt; repairs to plant at Heads, do, Morgan and Cable; repairs to tug boats, do, Young and Gardner; copper and brass work, do, A. and T. Burt; esal supply, Upper Harbor, do, John Mill and Co.; ooal supply, Lower Harbor, do, John Mill and Go.; coal supply, wharf cranes, do, Brenner Coal Company. (3) The estimated costof breakwater at fishermen's stage is L 5. (4) Arrangements for maintenance of plant: The Engineer in his report to the Committee submits certain suggestions which are attached. Resolved to recommend that the suggestions of the Engineer be carried on for the present, pending a re-arrangement of the establishment. (5) Inspector for tongue wharf: Engineer's .proposal that Mr Gillow be appointed is recommended accordingly. (0) The Chairman reported that he bad agreed to a settlement of damage done to beacon aud lamp by the as. Herald, the captain and agent of the vessel agreeing to pay L 25. The case was accordingly withdrawn from Court.—Adopted. General Fulton moved the following resolution—"That it be an instruction to the Finance Committee to bring up a budget statement for 1888 showing how it is proposed to balance expenditure and income, with details of proposals for increase of receipts and reduction of expenditure." He said that the Board was drifting on in an unsatisfactory manner. At first it was supposed that they would have a balance of L 7.000 after paying interest on their loan, but it now appeared that they would require LII.OOO to meet engagements; so the question was what was to be done. He did not wish to make any lengthy remarks, but would content himself at present with moving the resolution. Mr Wales seconded the resolution. Mr Mackehbas said that he bad intended moving in somewhat the same direction as General Gulton, and had drawn up a resolution on the subject, which might perhaps be taken as a preliminary to General Fulton s motion. Mr Reid suggested that the two motions, skould go on concurrently. After somesligbtdiscusuon, during the couras of which Messrs Wales and Mackerras came to words,-and the former expressed his determination not to be put down by anyone—he did not care who he wa3 it was resolved to add the following worls to the motion:— "Also toinquirehow our incomecan be increased by additions to port dues or otherwise, and to see what reductions in the staff, etc, can be ■ made." The motion was carried in this form, and the meeting adjourned.
