The Premier (Mr Gillies) has forwarded a letter to Sir Graham Berry (Agent-General for this Colony) desiring him to inform Sir Henry Holland that the Government of Victoria are averse to the proposal to grant permits to some New Caledonian liberated convicts to land at Australian ports in order that they may proceed therefrom to California. THE CHANGE OF NAME. MELBOURNE, 2. A memorandum has been forwarded to Sir Henry Parkes, Premier of New South Wales, by Mr Gillies, on behalf of the (Governments of Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland, in which the colonies jointly recognise the right of .New South VVales to adopt any available designation, but as that Colony proposes to take for itself the name of the entire continent, they protest. The Governments desire to represent that the appropriation of the name “Australia” to any individual Colony is a measure which the other colonics cannot .consent to. flie memorandum concludes hy expressing 9 hope that in consequence pf the sister colonies having serious objections, and strongly deprecating the proposed adoption of the name hy New South Wales, that Colony will, in deference to their sentiments, frankly and promptly abandon the attempt to interfere with the name of Australia. THE NEW SOUTH WALES BUDGET. SYDNEY, December 2. The Colonial delivered his {financial Statement in the Legislative Assembly last night. The surplus of L 910,000 prognosticated hy his predecessor was not realised; but, instead, it was estimated t))at at the close of the current financial year there would he a deficit of upwards of LI 50,000. The chief .increases in excess of jfchp Estimate were: hand Fund, L 340.000; d,d valorem apd specific Cpstopis' duties, LI 19,000; spirits and beer .duties, L|39,000; railway revenue, L 150.000; ail other sources of revenue being less than estimated. In addition to specific appropriations, a sura of has been expended on rabbit and providing relief for the ■Unemployed. The Customs Tariff Reversion provides foy Ryyiflg duties upon imported timber and dairy produce. The Statement announces the determination of the Government not to float a new loan for some time, but to issue Treasury bills. The estimated revenue for the ensuing financial year amounts pQ 1<8,731,Q00 and the expenditure to L 8,515,000, leaving a surplus of L2C0,000. A SHIP’S CREW RESCUED. SYDNEY, Decempeb B. (Received December 8 1887, at, 12.40 p.ro.) The German barque Livingstone (from Hamburg, July 21) arrived at this port yesterday. She reports having rescued the crew flf the British ship Mora, which was lost at sea whilst op a voyage from Hull to Natal with a cargo of timber. NEW SOUTH WALES POLITICS. SYDNEY, December 3. MrG.
