SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

The Liverpool Cup, run on Thursday, was (according to a Press Association cablegram) won by “Mr Manton’s” St. Mirin, with the same owner’s Gay Hermit second, and Mr Mithwick’s Kilereen third.

Jack Burke, John L. Sullivan, and Paddy Carroll, three noted exponents of pugilism, were through passengers to Sydney by the Mariposa. On the second day of the Winton races, Mr Paterson’s Pirate won the Maiden Plato, beating Wardrobe and Bustle, and paying a dividend of L2l 4s. The Prince of Wales’ Handicap, of 25 sovs, one mile and a-half, was won by Mr Gault’s Victory, with 9.12; beating Aparima (7.12), Cliff (8.12), Canezou (8.10), and Givis (8). Mr Hamilton’s Lucy, with 50sec start, won the Trot. Mr Brenchley’s Hastings (7.12) won the Flying Handicap of 20 sovs ; Mr Aldred’s Kuriwao appropriated the Selling Race ; and Mr Wilson’s Athol Daisy the Consolation Stakes, THE N.Z. CUP DISPUTE. Our own correspondent wires as follows : —The secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club having been served with an injunction not to pay over to Mr Stead the stakes for the New Zealand Cup, and Mr Stead, as treasurer, having been served with a similar injunction not to pay himself, the rest of the stakes won by the various owners were alone paid over at the settling this afternoon. In consequence of this the bookmakers unanimously decline to either pay or receive over the meeting, pending the decision of the Court. Tho Jockey Club give no reason for disallowing the protest.
