SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Distriet High School Committee, held on Friday cvoning, was attended by Messrs A. Thomson (chairman), W. Murray. J. Cook, D. Law, A. M'Kay, and the Rev. Mr Fee. The Education Board wrote informing the Committee that the Beard had decided to drain and enclose tho recently purchased sections with a substantial fence of poßts and wire with top rail; also to erect a 6ft fence on one portion of the school ground. Mr H. J. Pullar, secretary to the Lawn Tennis Club, wrote enclosing acheque for LB, part cost of asphalting portion of the school ground. A. Perry's tender for supplying wood and coal was accepted The Visiting Committee reported having accepted a tender for repairs to the ventilators. Accounts amounting to Ll4 Os Od were passed for payment. Messrs M'Kay and Murray were appointed Visitiug Committee for the ensuing month.

Thoeo present at Friday night's meet ing of tho Union street School Committee were—Messrs Mathews (chairman), Jackson, Wright, Swan, Gillies, and M'Laren. The sub-committee reported that the clocks and the asphalting of the grounds had been attended to, The head-master reported that the number on the roll for the month was -Boys, 386 girls, 348; total, 729. Average attendance—Boys 337.6; girls, 287; total, 624.6. Twenty-nine new scholars were admitted, and eight left. lie had filled up a form for the Education Board as follows: Five and under eix years: Boys, 33; girls, 27; total, 60 Six and under ecven: Boys, 48; girls, 86; total, 84. From these returns the Committee would buc how tho new proposals of tho Government would affect the school. Considerable eagerness was shown to obtain the plants kindly supplied by Mr Gillies to encourage the ohildren in tho cultivation of flowers, and many were making a good use of what they got. The children, numbering over 100, bad been practising three weeks for the production of a kinderspiel. An application from Mr James H. Gray for leave of absence to attend the examination for B.A. degree was granted. The police reported five children not attending school, and it was resolved —"Thit the Education Board be written to asking whether they were preparod to pay the expenses of prosecuting the defaulters."
