VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

The Dunedin Highland Rifles fired the ninth competition for a silver cup presented by Mr Frank Hyams on Saturday, at the Holyrood range. Color-sergeant Pattison, being the first to make 21 is the winner of the cup. The points gained in the competitions were as follows:—2nd, 5 points; 4th, 2; sth, 4; 6th, 2 ; 7th, 4 ; 9fch, 5; total points, 22. - A friendly match was fired at the Caversham range on Saturday last between two teams of five men a-side from the High School Cadets and the Caversham Rifles. The conditions were seven shots at 200, 400, and 500 yards; the cadets using the MartiniHenry, and the riflemen the short Snider. There was a high wind blowing across the range, but otherwise the weather > was suitable. The boys put on the very fair average of 75.8 out of a possible 105, and proved the victors by 51 points. Judging by this performance the High School Cadets should stand a good show of victory in the match for which they are preparing against tye Victorian schools.
