After the corps had marched out, and on returning to the hall, long-service medals were awarded to Sergeant J. Allen, Corporal Hutchinson, Private W. Hutchinson (North Dunedin Rifles), Volunteer Tait (City Guards), Volunteer Watson (Wakari). In presenting the awards, Major Wales addressed those present to the following effect: —This is the first occasion on which wc have had to deal with regard to merit its applied to long service. It would be well for other Volunteers to follow the example set by these men, some of whom have seen sixteen years' continuous service. It speaks well for their enthusiasm. Volunteer Tait had also done active duty in the North Island, for which he held a medal. There was a time when the Government used to give land in return for such services, but that time has passed by. Before dismissing the men, Lieutenantcolonel Wales referred to the military concert to be held to-night. He knew of no worthier cause, since their old friend and colonel had spent both money and time for many years in matters pertaining to volunteering, and he trusted that they would attend in such numbers as to once more give their old friend a fresh start in another colony. Volunteers are requested to attend the concert in uniform.
