THE HARBOR CHARGES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—Surely uo more forcible comment on the heaviness of the harbor charges here on the direct steamers could be afforded than the fact that the other day it was found to be more economical to rail a quantity of frozen mutton to Lyttelton all the way from Port Chalmers rather than bring the s.s. lonic here to receive it. There must be a screw loose somewhere when this is the rase, and to an outsider it would certainly appear that it would be better business to lower rates to induce steamers to call than to keep them so high as to make it oheaper for them to remain at another port and get their cargo sent up to them, as in this case. Perhaps some member of the Harbor Board will make a note of the matter and draw attention to it at next meeting.—l am, eoc., OTAGO. Dunedin, October 14.
