A special Press Association message states that at the Newmarket second October meeting on Thursday, the Champion Stakes, weight for age, was won by Mr H. T. Barclay's Bendigo, with Mr Mantons St. Mirin second, and Mr Mauton's Eiridspord third. Mr George Cummins has been entrusted with the task of building Hearn a racing skiff in which to take part in the Sydney sculling handicap. The Cromwell Jockey Club's spring meeting, held yesterday, furnished some good racing, all the events being well contested. Over LI,OOO was put through the totalisator. The various events resulted as follows: Maiden Plate, Kea; Spring Handicap, Mr Rivers's Don Jose; Trotting Handicap, Lucy; Cromwell Handicap, Don Jose ; Hack Selling Race, Archie ; Hurdle Race, Mr Sewell's Tenakoe. Meteor has been scratched for the Caulfield Cup: and Stamford, Rosewood, and Trenton for the Melbourne Cup, Beach and Hanlan are doing good work on the Parramatta. MELBOURNE NOTES. [Special to Press Association.] MELBOURNE, October 15. ■ Received Ootober 15,1887, at 11.50 a.m.) Meteor was running at Elsternwick races yesterday, and it is supposed that his running there resulted in his being scratched for the Caulfleld Cup. Late last night Silvermine shortened in price, and 100 to 18 was taken about him. Lord Allen has come into favor, and all the money in the market at 100 to 10 has been taken. His price is now 100 to 12. The Levite has advanced to 7 to 1, The Caulfield Cup is a great betting race for the ring, who have running for them Dunlop, Emerald, Escutcheon, and Spade Guinea. The latter is reported to be in splendid condition, and it is thought that the New Zealand owner has a great chance of winning the Cup with her. The weather is fine. The Cup will be run at four o'clock.
