THE LAND BOARD.

The meeting to-day was attended by Messrs Maitland (Chief Commissioner), Clark, Logan, Duncan, and Dallas. Mr H. Orbell requested the Board to recommend the Government to accept surrender of Runs 218 a, 171 d, 171 c, and 171g, as he was unable to pay the extremely high rent. Referred to the Government for consideration. The Board agreed to pay Mr W. Reardon the sum of Lls as valuation on section 22, block 1, Otara, originally held under deferred payments. The District Land Officer at Clyde, reporting on the application by John Pryde for a coal-mining lease at Bannockburn, wrote that the statements made by the applicant were correct, and that the rent had been Eaid to date on section 9, block 1, Bannockurn.—The applicant was requested to forward a sketch of area, and to state anticipated output. J. P. Gilhooly asked that sections 25 to 30, block 15, Chatton village settlement, be grouped in one lot and opened as suburban land on deferred payments.—Referred to Ranger Hughan for report. .The application of Alexander M'Cunn to lease portion of Beanmont Bridge reserve numbered section 30, block 3, Tuapeka West, was declined. The Gold-mining certificates of Camille Malfray, of section 9, block 1, and Dugald Wright and others, of section 14, block 7, Nokomai, were declared void for non-execu-tion of leases. Mr Jabez Burton, on behalf pf Jos. . Haughton, who recently purchased sections 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10, block 3, Teviot, applied to occupy section 2 adjoining for grazing purposes, on condition of destroying the rabbits on the same.—Referred to Chief Commissioner.

Mr T. C. Collins, secretary to the Heriot Progress Association, trasmitted a resolutiod of the Committee for advice as to preventing drovers from camping stock on the Heriot township.—Ranger Hughan requested to interview the writer. The Tuturau Road Board wrote asking the Board to reconsider their decision with reference to recording a road-line to section 12, block 10, Tuturau, through the bush reserve.—lt was resolved that if the Road Board effect a survey, the Board will record the road on the plan. Captain Wing (of Wakatipu) and Mr W. Turton, : on behalf of D. M'Bride, wrote

objecting to a license being granted to W. T. Haines for a jetty site opposite section 9, > block 15, Qaeenstown.—Deferredforßanger's Ranger Valpy reported on an application by Messrs Sutherland to take up sections 6 and 7, block 5, Dunback, as a small grazing: run, recommending that the same w granted, as the land was hot fit for deferred payment, and also'recommending that those sections and sections block 9, Dunback, be grouped and offered as a small grazing run. The Ranger also suggested that Mr Cameron be allowed to retain his deferred-payment seotaon 14, block 5, as a small grazing run.—lt' was resolved that the Board cannot at present recommend section 14 as a small grazing ran, nor sections 6 and 7 for same system. Mr W. Fisher, on behalf of settlers, wrote objecting to Hinkaon Mea obtaining a right

over section 50, block 2, Blackstone, as the settler* in the district had obtained the right to graze stock over the Crown lands in the block.—Right to graze to remain as originally arranged with settlers. Mr J. Thomson, on bmalf of R. D- Dick, asked permission to substitute an offer for fifty acres in place of one for five acres, lately applied for by him in block 1, Catlins. numbered taction 38, and to have it opened on deferred payments.—Referred to Ranger for report. ■ Peter Campbell was granted a license for section 39, block 4, Catlins, on deferred payments. The Receiver of Land Revenue asked the Board to deal wjth land leased to A. Gilbert in block 1,, Upper Wakatipu, on which the rents are in arrear.—Ordered to stand over for a month. Consideration of the application by R. M'Dougall to purchase .portion of Crown lands adjoining block 47, Pembroke, was adjourned for a fortnight. . It was decided that notice be given to James Nevill that unless, .arrears of rent on lease 224 are paid up by 31st inst., the lease will be forfeited, and steps taken to recover possession of the land. The following were declared the successful tenderers for perpetual-lease sections in the Poolburn district:—Jessie Nevill, section 18, block 3, 135 a 3r 38p, and section 19, block 3, also 135 a 3r 38; James Nevill, section 20, block 3,135 a3r 38p—all at Is per acre.

It was resolved that T. Spain be informed that unless all arrears on lease No. 131 are paid before the 31st inst. the lease will be declared forfeited and steps taken to recover possession. No legislation having taken place, tho Receiver of Land Revonuo now brought the matter before tho Board, as tho arrears wore mounting up to a considerable siun.—Mr Simpson, who appeared on behalf of sevoral of tho deferred-payment settlors interested, suggested that before tho Board took any measures to forfoit they should ascertain from tho Government whether there wa9 any probability of relief being granted by the House in the direotion desired by the settlers.—The Board resolved to communicate with tho Government and ascertain their views on the subject before taking steps as to the arrears.
