Referring to the scratching of Nelson, the ' Post' says:—"The statement lfalast week s 'Referee I 'was said to have been made on the authority of Major George himself, and doubtless has led to many persons relinquishing good wagers to others of sharper percep tions, who were • benevolently' disposed to take them over on the off chance. The, whole circumstances at present emit a very fishy odor, and it is evident that someone has cunningly played into the hands of the vultures of the turf. For the sake of the little morality that exists in that curious microcosm the racing world, it is highly desirable that those whdse reputations are immediately concerned should come forward and clear themselves from the suspicion which at present rests oil them." _ At Greymouth on Saturday William Hill and George Todd ran a match over three distances for L 25 a-side. Hill wott the first two distances just as he liked.A most determined prize fight came off on August 11, at the house of a wellknown sportsman within a mile of Shoreditch Church, between George Mahoney alias " Brave 'Un," twenty-five years of age; and William -Perrin alias "Old 'Un.'' Mationey's seconds were Bob Preston and Jack Hicks, and Perrin was seconded by James Flynn and Alf Crisp. The men fought in a most determined manner for an hour and three-quarters* and at the end of forty-three rounds were each so terribly punished that the seconds stopped the fight. Mahoney was rendered atone blind in one eye, and Perrin had one of his eyes ripped open. When the fight was stopped it was impossible to say which man had the advantage. Thiß is the third time the men have met, and on each occasion the fight ended in a draw. Mahoney works as a sawyer in the vicinity of Hoxton. Perrip is thirty-four years old, and works as a painter. The stakes wero LlO a-side. After the fight there w»b a champagne dinner at the hostelry where the encounter took place, the combatants sitting side by side. Jem Smith, the champion, was present both at the fight and dinner. .
