r A certain country town boasts of three stingy men who hail from the " land o' cakes." One of them will not drink as much water as he wants unless it be from anotber man's well; the second requires his family to write a " small hand" to save ink ; and the third stops his clock at night in order to save the wear and tear of the machinery. A lover writing to his sweetheart, expatiating upon his affection for her, describes his heart as being rolled out flat like a pancake and .folded round hers.
