MUNICIPAL.

South Dunedin.—Last night's meeting of the South Dunedin Borough Council was attended by Crs Henderson (in the chair), Marlow, Sullivan, Fiddes, Robinson, Davie, Chetwin, and Cossens.—Mr Taylor, secretary of the gaa department, having written with reference to the asphalting of the Cargill road footpaths, it was stated that the gas engineer had received instructions to proceed with the work at once.—A letter from Mr Thomas Burton, asking that the drainage of Mr Tyree's property on the Anderson Bay road* be connected with the wooden sewer into the bay, was referred to the Works Committee to report. —The Council accepted Mr Thomas Kurd's offer to board the pound fence between his property and the pound, and also to' repair the roof of the pound shed, if the Council would supply the material. Mr William Ritchie called the Council's attention to the state of the Cargill road footpath in front of his premises, and the inspector was instructed to attend to the matter at once.—The report of tbp Fjnancje Committee recommended that accounts amounting to, LI3 10s 9d be passed ior paymont. Port Cualmers.— This Council's meeting last evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr E. G. Allen), Crs Watson, Cook, Gardiner, Road, Schumacher, Murray, Pullar, North, Putnam, and M'Kenzie.—A letter was received from the Auditor-General intimating that he had forwarded copies of a eiroular in reference to the audit of Corporation accounts and the proposed method of keeping them, which he requested the Mayor to lay before the Council. He added that he had appointed Mr R. if. Leary, of Dunedin, to examine the accounts of the Borough up to the 80th September. Mr W. Ridley wrote offering to sell to the Council seotlon 119, East Ward, through which the Corporation have formed a road, for the sum of L7O. The clerk was in* structed to reply that the Council had no recommendation to make on the matter.— Mr Chick's offer to remove earth from Sootia street to the full width, or to leave a footpath, for the sum of 4d per yard, was referred to the Works Committee. —A letter was received from the Premier's office intimating that the plans for the new Government and Municipal buildings were still under consideration, the proposed accommodation not being considered satisfactory in every respect.—Mrs Moir. Messrs Hackworth, Collett, Elmer, Rae, and M'Dermid applied to have their names inserted in the burgess roll, The application was granted. —lhe Finance Committee's report, which was adopted, recommended the payment of accounts amounting to LIOS 8s Id. They stated that the amount of funds in the bank was as follows:—General account (Dr.), L 392 17s 6d; water account (Cr.), L3117s lid; and since last meeting L 689 10s had been paid on account of coupons.—The Works Committee submitted a report of works carried out since last meeting, and set forth that the tender of Mr C. Stephenson for rubble walling in Grey street at 13s 6d per cubic yard had been accepted, and the work was in progress. The inppector of works had reported to them that the cost of widening the present path on the Town Belt to admit of dray traffic to the upper part of Mansford Town would be L2 10s for the formation of two and a-half chains, while the eost of metalling the road and widening the same where required would be Lls, making a total of Ll7. The report was adopted. —On tfre motion of Cr Murray it was resolved—" I'bafc the estimated cost of making a dray road to fjpper Mansford Town be submitted to the Waikouaiti Council, and if that body were willing to contribute half the cost and forward a cheque for same, and signifying the same, this york be carried out.—The Sanitary Committee reported that the proper steps bad been taken to abate a nuisance in George Btreet. Adopted.—The Baths Com: mittee reported that, after inspection of the baths, they found it necessary to recommend the Council to make sundry repairs, esti? mated to oost from L 25 to L3O, It was resolved to adopt the report j and the Baths Committee were empowered to call for tenders.—Cr Pullar reported that during the past month 662 tons of water had been supplied to the shipping. <— Cr Murray I stated that the Railway Department''had .ereoted a gate on the railway platform where dfcayd pould load or discharge goods.' 'ftfe moved, and Gr Schumacher seconded—"That the,ty)wu clerk write ,to the owners of drays' informing them of the fact, and requesting them to avail themselves of the nqw stand." Carried.—On the motion of Cr M'Kenzie it waa resolved—" That the

inspector of works be instructed to remove and store the street lamps until next year." The Mayor remarked thet great credit was due to Mr S. Hodge for the manner in which he attended to the kerosene lamps during the past season. Mr Hodge had. invented a burner which could not be exfcijjKiHshed ;by winds, and there was a great saving of oil. —Cr M'Kenzie moved—"That the advertisement in reference ,to leasing the Dunback reserve be continued, and that the Reserve Committee bring up a; report at next meeting as to the best methooVof leasing the place.' This was seconded by Cr Murray and carried.—Cr M'Kenzie moved —" That the Reserves Committee draw up conditions re leasing the Dunback reserve, and submit the same at next meeting." Seconded by Cr Murray and carried.—Cr M'Kenzie moved—" That the Works, Fire Brigade, ; Lighting,' and Sanitary Committees consist of Crs Watson, Miller, [Murray, and Putnam; Finance Reserves and Cemetery Committees, Crs Cook, De Maus, Schumacher, and Mackenzie; Water, Baths, and By-laws, Cra Gardner, North, Pullar, and Read." In support of the motion, Cr M'Kenzie stated that on each of the Committees there was a councillor from each ward, Cr Schumacher seconded. Cr Pullar considered that no councillor should be allowed to name the .whole of the I Committees. He 1 had been associated with the Water Committee during the past year, anfl considered he was quite as fit to aot on the Works Committee" as Cr Murray, and moved the following amendment—"That the names of the councillors for each ward be placed in the ballot box, and the first names drawn from each ward constitute the Committee." Seconded by Cr North. Crs M'Kenzie arid Schumacher objected to the ballot, when considerable discussion took place, during which several personal remarks were mad.e, and on it being put. to the meeting the amendment was carried by 6to 4.
