Doubts are thrown on the genuineness of the reported find of gold at Maungatatutari, King Country. John M'Culloch, a stonehreaker, was found drowned in the harbor on Sunday morning. The wife of deceased had not seen him since he left for work on Saturday morning.

About midnight on Saturday the house of Mr Stephen Clarke, a settler at Swanston, was burned down, and two of his children— Ada Isabella (age<l seven) and Ada Bentley (aged four) —were burned to death. Clarke awoke and found the place on fire, and succeeded in saving his wife (who is an invalid) and one child. While trying to save the two others he got badly burned. WELLINGTON, September 19.

A telegraph operator named Vine, while bathing near Island Bay yesterday, was seized by an octopus, and only got clear with great difficulty. A boat accident occurred this afternoon. A laborer named Collins, accompanied by his wife and four children, were out sailing, when one of the children shifted to the lee side of the boat, causing it to capsize, Collins and his wife and one child got ashore safely, while the others were rescued by some boatmen who put off to the rescue. In the Bankruptcy Court this morning the Judge suspended the discharge of two bankrupts for twelve and six months respectively, on the ground of previous bankluptcies and other irregularities. The Supreme Court to-day and yesterday was occupied by the malicious prosecution case of Graham v. Didrichs.

A great many men on the Midland Railway line are still out of work, and are anxiously looking forward to new contracts being let. It is considered very probable that there will be some new ones shortly. The demand for timber is so great that the local mill is quite unable to supply it, and considerable quantities are being imported from Hokitika. TIMARU, September 19.

An information laid against a publican to-day ,for allowing gambling on his licensed premises, was dismissed, it not being shown that the licensee was aware that it was going on.
