SCHOOL COMMITTEES
The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers District High School Committee last night was attended by Messrs A. Thomson (in the chair), J. Morgan, J. Cook, A. M'Kay, and Rev. Mr Fee. Mr H. J. Pullar, secretary of the local Tennis Club, forwarded a cheque for 17 7s, being part of the Club’s subscription for asphalting the school grounds. Messrs Pullar and Dixon, on behalf of the Tennis Club, waited upon the Committeo and asked permission to remove a portion of the fence about 3ft nearer the janitor’s house, they agreeing to asphalt the same, and to pay all expenses. The application was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Messrs Law and Morgan were appointed a Visiting Committee, The Union street School Committeo held their usual monthly meeting last night. Present : Messrs Mathews (chairman), Swan, Jackson, Wright, Drew, M’Laren, and J. L, Gillies. The head-master reported that the number on the roll for the month of August was: Boys 381, girls 321; total, 702, Average attendance: Boys 325.2, girls 271.6 ; total, 596.8. A considerable amount of sickness was prevalent among the children, and for a number of days the average was low. Miss White resumed her duties on August 22, and he (the head-master) had pleasure in testifying to the earnestness and care with which Miss A. W, Rogers had per formed her duties in the interval. The gross proceeds of the J ate entertainment in old Knox Church were Ll6 12s. The Committee passed several accounts for payment, and a vote of thanks was minuted to Messrs B. Brown and G. Harder for the assistance they had rendend at the recent entertainment. The chairman reported what had been done by the delegates to the School Committees’ Conference, and the meeting expressed approval of the resolutions passed.
