WELLINGTON, August 31
A man was arrested last evening on a charge of stealing four pounds of sausages from the steamer Wanaka. When the constable arrived on the spot he found his man lying on the wharf with the goods under his arm. It turned out that in trying to get away he had broken his ankle, and so fallen a victim to justice.
The Fine Arts Association have resolved to incorporate themselves under the title of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. It is proposed to provide instruction for students, and possibly buildings may be erected on the site on the reclaimed land granted by the Government. The Society intend importing statuary and models from London.
The average cost of supplies for the patients in the local hospital this year is L2l 4s 3d ; last year it was i.,25 7s lid. The friendly societies raised L 239 18s by their series of Jubilee fetes, and propose to devote the money to building an orphanage. They have proposed to add the money to a sum of LI ,300 which the Benevolent Society have in hand, but there seems to be a hitch in the matter.
Three bankrupts had their discharge suspended this morning for various terms, on the ground that they had not kept proper books.
