COMMISSIONER WALKER'S RETIRE MENT. MELBOURNE, August 2(5. (Received August 27, 1887, at 1.20 a.m.)
It is announced that Mr Walker, Commissioner of Trade and Customs in the Ministry, will shortly resign owing to illhealth.

THE CHESS TOURNAMENT. ADELAIDE, August 27,
The ohesa tournament was brought to a conclusion last evening, when Charbrick (South Australia) was declared the winner with a score of 74 out of a possible 9. Easling (Victoria) was second, having scored 7 points. Hookham (New Zealand) was last but one, scoring 3 points.
A LAND TAX IN QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, August 27.
In the Assembly last night the motion by Mr Morhead, leader of the Opposition, declaring further taxation unnecessary, was negatived, the principle of the land taxbeing affirmed by the House.
