A concert tendered to the Port Chalmers Football Club took place yesterday evening in the Foresters’ Hall. There was a good attendance, and the Mayor presided. The opening chorus “How merrily and gay the village bells ” was by the members of the Sawyers Bay Choral Society, under the leadership of Mr Cleghorn. The Misses Hooper, Davidson, Faton, Wignell, with Messrs Granville and Gardner, sang. Mr M'Com ell played a cornet solo, and Mr Cohen gave a violin solo. In the second part a piano duet was given by Miss and Master Rennie. Mrs Downes, Misses Wignall, Elder, and Kelly, Mess;a Wilson, Dixon, and Cleghorn contributed songs. The duet “ Silver Rhine,” and the solos “ Anchored ” and “ Daddie ” were loudly applauded. “The Footballers,” composed for the occasion by Mr D. A. De Maus, was given as a finale, the chorus being rendered by the members of the Club, who appeared in costume. Mrs Shelmerdine acted as accompanist.
Mary Anthony at Liverpool has been committed for trial for the murder of her three children by cutting their throats after administering laudanum to them.
