AUCKLAND, August 11
Fiji news per Wainni is to the sth August. H.M.S. Nelson arrived at Suva on the 2nd, and the Swinger on the 4th. They were to leave yesterday (10th). Doctor Eckstein, of the German warship Adler, died in the Suva Hospital of diabetes on the 4th. The brigantine Gazelle, 150 days from London, with the plant of a lighthouse on board, arrived on July 23. The New Zealand Sugar Company’s mill is turning out 200 tons of sugar per week, and the prospect is encouraging. A general and enthusiastic movement is now in progress for annexation to Victoria. Meetings have been held in Suva, Levuka, and Fiji, and resolutions were unanimously arrived at in each case to petition the Victorian Parliament for approval and co-operation. Strong co-operative committees are to be formed in Melbourne and London.
WELLINGTON, August 11
A warrant was issued at the Instance of Mr James Gattell, charging W. E. Waters with misappropriating LIOO in his capacity of servant of the City Advance Company. WANGANUI, August 11.
Mr Ballance has arranged with Captain Somerville that the New Zealand Rifle Association are to have 350 of the new Remington-Lee rifles now on their way from San Francisco. The weapons will be issued to members only, and Captain Somerville wishes all members intending to take part in the Oamarn meeting to apply at once, the Defence Minister not making any charge for the use of the rifles daring the meeting, bat there are conditions attached to the offer which will have to be complied with. Two hundred rounds of ammunition per rifle will he issued, and will have to be paid for. Those wishing to join the Association must do so at once, and give a guarantee that they will enter for Oamaru; the guarantee to come through the officers commanding districts. BLENHEIM. August 11.
William Turnbull was charged at the Police Court this morning with assault with intent on a girl sixteen years of age. He was remands till Saturday.' INVERCARGILL, August 11. Two young men—Arthur Harvey and Herbert Anderson, sons of well-known and respected citizens—were arrested this forenoon on a charge of robbery with violence. The case was remanded. The prosecution allege that they had been drinking with a sailor, whom they decoyed into a back street, where Harvey knocked him down, and held him down while Anderson went through his pockets. Harvey had been previously convicted of larceny, and was lot out under the Probation Act. He violated the conditions, and had to serve the remainder of his term.
