This sum, which is equal to Bj per cent, on the Company’s paid-up capital and lial Lilies, is L3LI 9r more than the balance of revenue account (or the p evious year, although then the receipt, from fares were LUV2 IBs more than has been reoeivid during the year under review, 12.623 more passengers having been carried during the previous year. After providing for interest on what the Company borrowed, the profit and loss account shows a balance of L 837 6s 7d. The directors recommend that of this amount L3OO be written off for depreciation against machinery and plant account, ar d that the balance—L637 6s 7d—bo carried forward. The directors have pleasure in testifying to the efficiency, care, and watchfulness with which the Company's eirp’.ojßs have discharged their various duties. The report of the Victorian R iyal Banking Commission recommends, brirfly; That the note issue should be sroured by making notes issued in Victoria a first charge on the assets of any hank in tho event of liquidation. That no Lank shou'd bo allowed to issue notes until ir, has a subscribed capital of at least L260,C00 and paid-up cvpit.U of at least L 125.000 That it bo made a misdemeanor on the pa't of any trank to deposit its notes as security for advances made by any monetary institution or capitalist. That tho restrictions placed on chartered banks and banks under special Acta to lend money on mortgage in anticipation of debt to bo incurred be removed so far as concerns banks incorporated by any Act of tho Victorian Legislature That any bank desiring to come under tho Companies Statute should bo able to do so by registering under tho Act. That the accuracy cf quarterly banking returns he sworn to by two officers of each hank, one of whom should be the accountant or officer bv whom the return has been made up. To prevent tiro continuance of iho objectionable mode adopted by some banks of stating their financial resources to the public by advertisements and otherwise, tho Commission recommend that in alt public announcements of financial institutione, if they advertise their authorised capital or their subscribed cipital, they should advertise also at tire same time their paid-up capital, and that noarinal or i uthorised o.pital should not be advertised as capital without having tho words nominal ”or “ authorised ” prefixed. A Bill is being prepared embodying these recommendations, STOCK AND STATION REPORT. Mr Donald Stronach (on behalf of tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited reports for tho week ended August 10 a«i follows Fat Cattle.—A medium supply of 114 head was yarded to-day. The quality ranged from ordinary to good and prime. Competition was fairly active, and prices showed an advance for best quality, fully last week’s rates being maintained for medium to good. Competition was (airly active all through the sales, but owing to the largo number offered, and but little demand for export, prices receded Is Pd to 2s per head from last week’s. Best cross-bred wethers brought 9s 6d to 13s 3d, one pen 14s 9d; ordinary, 7s fid to 9r; best do ewes, 8s to 10s fid; a few extra heavyweights, 11s 9d ; ordinary, 6s (id to 7s fid ; merino we hers, 4s fid to os. Store Cattle.—The demand Is not very brisk, at tho same time there are buyers for ail sorts, but owing to so few offering there is very little business done, no sales of any importance transpiring. Store Sheep.—There are very few of these changing hands now, the only demand at present being confined to small lots, occasionally required for finishing olf on turnips, and the roost done in this way is at Burnside saloyards. Wo have an inquiry for young mo-ino owes.

Wool.-We are without advices from the Home market since date of our last.

Sheepskins.—We had a very full attendance of buyers on Monday at our regular weekly sale, when we offered a lengthy catalogue, made up, as usual, of country dry skins, in addition to a good number of town and country butchers’ green, oil of whioh were in good demand Competition was spirited all through, and, considering quality, prices obtainrd were more in favor of sellers Country dry crossbreds, low to medium, brought lOd to 8s 3d; good to best, 3s fid to s<Bd; dry merinoes, lowjto medium, 9d to 2s 2d; good to best, 2s 3d to 4s; dry pelts, to 8d; butchers’ green oross-breds, 8s 2d, 3s 6d, 3s Sd, 3s lOd, 4s, 4s 2d, 4s4d, 4s 6d, 4s 8d ; do do, merinoes, 2a 3d, 2s Cd, 2s Od, 2e lOd, 2s Ud, Ss. ‘ Rabbit-skins.—A good demand is experienced, and all offered saleable, but prices realised ate hardly on a level with those obtained last month. On Monday we offered a moderate catalogue to a fair attendance of the trade, who competed spiritedly up so certain limits, whioh in some instances did not reach reserves, and therefore had to bo withdrawn (or shipment. Wo offered 6 bales and 32 bags, of which we sold tbo following marks :-TN, 2 bales medium winter greys. Is fid; Min circle, 4 bags do do, Is SM; GM, Ido do do, Is 4d ; RS, 2 bags do do. It fid; do, 2 do do, Is 4d; do, 2do interior, 7d; TAIEKI LAKE, 2 bags suckers, 2}d; do, 2do black and (awn, 6Jd; OS, 2 do inferior, fid; do. Bdo autumn, 9Jd ; do, Ido medium greys, Is 3d ; DN, 1 do, Is; GM, Ido autumn, 9£d; N, Xdo summer, fid; M in circle, Ido mixed, 8d; UoB, 2do early winter, lljd to Is; O, 1 do autumn, BJd; do, Ido early winter greys, la 2Jd; 888, 2do early winter greys, damp and milldewed, is ; do, 1 do mlxed blaok and greys, lid.

Rides,—There aro buyers for all coming forward, both for shipment and local manufactuiing; but prices obtained, 1 especially for light and medium, are scarcely up to those ruling earlier, No doubt to the careless manner in which the greater propb-tioh of the consicnments coming to hand is dde tho reluctance shown by blivets in giving prices lor sloppy and hacked hides, which would have been of much more value if carefully flayed and kept clean and In good condition. We quote for infeii'-r end built,’, IJd to 2d; li-ht, 2}d to 2§l; medium, 2JI to S^i; heavy, 3Jd to 3}d per lb. Tallow.—A- steady demand continues to he experienced for local consumption. Tin re is idso some being shipred, but this is principally on icidcrers’ account. who prefer shipping rather than accept prices offered here. Buyers for shipment are somewhat careless about operating in the m gntime, owing to the largo stocks reported to be held in London, which tends In the direction of weakening our market here. Present quotations are For inferior and mixed, 10s to 13a; medium to good, Us to 10s; good to best mutton, 17» to 18s; rough t it, Inferior 6a to is, medium to good 8a to ib j best caul, fresh and olom, 10s to lie per cwt Grain -Wheat Is in very moderate request, at prices about equal to last week's quotations, and the few parcels tbit ere bi(ng sold consist chi'fly of choice samples of special kinds, lor immediate use and fcm particular localities; otherwise the market is extremely quiet during the last week, and parcels of ordinary quality would bo difficult to move at a slight reduction on late rates. There being but little export doroand for flour, millers are not Inclined to inorca c stocks at present on hand. Fowls' wheat con inues in good demand and easily placed, but buyer e are not disposed to operate at anything higher than prices ruling lately. We quote prime milling, 4s to 4s 2d; for particular kinds urgently wanted, 4e Sd ; medium to good, 3r 9d to 3s lid ; inferior and (owl.-,’ wheat, 3s to 8s 6d (ex store, bags weighed In).— Oats continue in moderate demand, but have bad, if anythin?, an easier tendency during the week. There is certainly no improvement to report, transactions being limited to a few sales to local millers and produce deale e. Shippers are not operating to any extent, although we believe a slight concession would lead to more business, more especially in stout bright lines, these being all along in most request, stocks of which are now very much r.duoed in bulk, while medium and discolored sorts are heavier in stocks, and much more difficult to dispose of at prices on a level with best quality. We quote prime milling Is BJd to Is 9d; short, bright feed. Is 8d to Is fsd ; siicbtly off color, Is 7Jd to Is 8J; inferior and medium, Is 4d to Is 7d ; long tartars and Danish, if flt for seed, in small qu entities, Is 0d ■ to 2s (ex store, b-igs weighed in). Barley: This market continues quiet. Superior samples of malting aro still saleable, but few such are offering; in fact, the quantity of any description is limited, although at the same time sufficient for requirements, which are not by any means pressing. We quote piime malting 3( lOd to 4s; extra choice, 4s 3d ; medium, Ss 6d to Ss 9i; feed and milling, Ss to 3s 6d (ex store, sacks as per agreement.) Ryegrass-seed.—We are still unable to report any business o( much impotanoe passing, but have no doubt as the spring nd ances an improvement wi 1 bo apparent. Meantime, we quote best machine-dressed old pasture, 3r 61 to 4s; medium, 3s to 3s 3d ; farmers’ parce’s (undressed), 2s to 3s (sacks extra). Cocksfoot also continues dull, although some sales are effected. We quote best, 4sd to sd; medium, 3d to 4d per lb. Potatoes.—There is no improvement to note of any oonaquenee. [By Telegraph.] Melbourne, August 9.—The manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company reports : li For shipping wheat there is no material change, and prices are, if anything, weaker. Quotations aro Ss 9d to 3s lid. Malt.ng barley is quieter at 4s 9d to 6s. New Zealand oats (feeding sorts) are in fair demand at 2s lOd to 2s lid ; milling are steady at 2s lid to 3s. New Zealand oats (under bond), 2s to 2s 2d. Ryegrass is quoted at Is lOd.
