PUBLIC BODIES' LEASEHOLD ACT.

jl uuuiu uvuiiiO LCjAODavui; nvi. ' TO TUB EDITOR. Sir,— ln reference to your article on this subject in your issue of the Bth lost, and more especially that part of it referring to Mr Fish’s motion for the adoption of tho Act by the City Council, I beg to explain that Mr Stamper, our solicitor, was instructed several weeks before such notice <{ motion wos given by Mr Fish to prepare cUr petition to the Council for the reduction of our rents. This p.-tition was duly signed and presented to the C'unoil,-was referred to the Reserves Oommitteee, and tqbsequcntly reported to the Council. All this was several weeks ago, and certainly long before Mr Fish announced himself os a candidate for Parliamcotaiy honors fhc Council, I believe, ore desirous of acooedipe to the prayer of our petition, and f maintain that Mr Fish is merely doing his duty In proposing that (he Council adopt the Act and give us teiiants relief. The Harbor Hoard and, I believe, tho High School Board have adopted the Act, apd given relief to their tenants by reducing their rents; and why should not the CM Gounod do llk#» So far as I am oonoerned, It is no ekdtlon dodge to curry favor on Mr Phh’s behalf, but a matter of necessity for myeelf and co-petltloners to bavo our rents reduced, whh hj would have been apparent bad voU sat out In full our petition and my letter to the Council when they were read out at the meeting of the Council. , ... I maintain that tho thanks of the oltltsns should be accorded to Mr Fish for hie foresight in tab ing such a motion for tho relief of the Corporation tenants. Mr Fish proves himself to have the Interests of ue Working men at heart, and 1 regret that you should think it necessary to attribute unworthy motives to Mr FI ih, and fo endanger our cause now before the Council.-1 am, etc., F. H. Bonce. Dunedin, August 10.
