DR STUART AND THE GAELIC SOCIETY.
TO TUB BDITOB.
Sift, —'"Ex-ohalrman School Committee,” in his letter re Bishop Nevill’s late lecture, makes this statement : " Though the head minister of the Church of my family thought the Gaelic Society’s meeting more Important than hie presence alongside of the Bishop that night.” Now, sir, it is true Dr Stuart did not think anything as that statement implies, and had the writer ol It made inquiries first, he would find facts as to the matter which would prevent him publishing such a statement. Dr Stuart is president of the Gaelic Society. As such he pro-mised-and made memorandum of his promise that be would attend on the night of the annuel gathering of the Society, to preside at the soirde and concert. He made the promise some time previous to any mention being made of the Bishop’s ecture at ail, so the doctor could not ” sit alongside of the Bishop that night” without violating his duty and promise to the Gaelic Society. Thcr.fore, let not your correspondent “and the other supporters of Knox Church that he kno*e,” judge ill of the worthy Doctor for beiog true to bis promise, in reference to those by whom he was interviewed first—l am, etc., D. MacMillan. Dunedin, August 9.
