BISHOP NEVILL'S ADDRESS.
[From Our Special Reporter.]
AUCKLAND 1 , August 3,
The ' Star' Bays that the imputation bast on the moral etatriina of the girls attending our public schools in the speech delivered by Bishop Nevlll will arouse a feeling of indignation from end to end of New Zealand. Mr Jago, chairmait of one of the Dunedin school committees, has earned our best thanks for the prompt and effectual manner in which he has met and rebutted the accusation. But nothing short of evidence in substantiation of the charge, or a complete recantation and apology, ought to be accepted,by the citizens of Dunedin for this wholesale slander upon their daughters. After twitting Bishop Nevill with the fact that Anglicans only talk dgainst the pttblio schools; while another large section of the community has set up schools of their own, the article notices the argument that the State schools have crushed out competition, tthd says: "In conclusion, there is no lack Of other System's with which the Bishop may compare the one that is doing such good work in New Zealand. We invite him to tell us something about the results in England when the Church had the full control of education, and to give lisafew.figures Bhowing how many millions the Church spent annually, and what proripHion of the people could read and write. Tell us something about the manipulation of the rich endowments that ought to have been used for the education of the poor ; and to state the statistics of crime arid illegitimacy and other offences against the moral code when the people took what little book knowledge they received just as the ChUrch was pleased to deal it out to them. When Bishop Nevill has done this, and has compared the information so obtained with the moral standard of the girls atteriding public schools in New Zealand, we shall know a little better what weight to place upon this wanton slandei" which the Bishop has, to use the mildest expression, so thdughtlessly uttered."
