Search for Relics of Captain Cook.
A Cooktown telegram to the Sydney ‘DailyTelegraph’ on June 7 last says:— “ Captain Mackay, the harbor-master, returned to-day from searching for the gnUs thrown overboard from the Endeavor when stranded on Endeavor Beef on Jnns 11, 1770. Messrs Armit and Bauer accompanied him. The reef was identified' not merely by the latitude and longitude, hwt by Lieutenant Fickersgill’s sketch tanas from the original chart drafts by Captain Cook. The reef was carefully examined for four days without finding any. trace Of the guns or other things. After carefully considering the formation of the reef, the party concluded that the coral has overgrown toe material, which most probably was thrown on to the very edge of the reef. Searohwill have to be made during the north-westerns, when smooth water will facilitate operations, and the navvies employed can break up to a depth ofaoouple of feet. Lieutenant Pickerszillb sketch ofthe reef is found to be wonderMly accurate, and the general aspect of the reef has not altered during the lntervening period.”'
