DUNEDIN LABOR EXCHANGE.

A meeting of the Board of Advice was held to-day. Present—Messrs Logan, J. P. Maitland (presiding), Martin, and Allan (secretary).

Mr Allan read his report of proceedings since last meeting, viz.: A few mariied men in destitute circumstances made application for employment on the relief works at Romahapa, and, after due inquiry, were accepted. They were to bo forwarded to the works yesterday, but, probably on account of the inclemency of the weather, they did not put in an appearance. The wives and families of two of the men on the railway works received a pass to Romahapa to join their husbands. The wives complained that it was impossible to keep up two homes out of the earnings of their husbands, so much diminished by broken weather. These men are anxious to settle on the land set apart for them. The demand for men during the last fortnight has been very poor. Several good farming men are applying who are willing to take reasonable wages. The applications made by employers of labor during the fortnight were—two farm servants, two ploughmen, one milker, two quarrymen, three atonebreakers. Registered for hire: Five ploughmen, one miller, one shepherd, two blacksmiths, two painters, one station couple, one milker, one quarryman. Engaged: One milker at L3O, one ploughman at 17s 6d, one quarryman at 20s, one ploughman at 15s per week, one stonebreaker. Mr Allan reported having received a telegram from Inspector Thompson, at Oamaru, making inquiries if any work was open at Catlin Railway for unemployed. Mr Allan replied that there was no room for any more at present.Approved. A few married men will be forwarded to the railway works to-morrow.
