It is as follows “ Tho bearer of this note (Mr Webb) and his family have been living' at my store at Hukerunui for some time, they having come to this district with the Intention of taking up land under tho Village S.ttlement Act. They took up land here (lifiy acres), and have been living in a hut • clanging to die near my store. Three of the children aresl.i l laid up sick, and they have no means whatever to support themselves. The mother (Vlra Webb) is in a critical state,"expecting to be laid up in a Couple of mouths’ time.” Dr Sissons further says that be believes tho statements in ‘ flic letter to bo perfectly correct. Tho family are suffe-ing IKom fever, caused try exposure and the crowded state of their tent. ' ; Mr John Lundon is on the stump in favor of tho villag6 settlement scheme, He had an enthusiastic meeting at Otdhuhu last night, and to-night holds a meeting at (he Temperance Hall hero. ■ During tho last few weeks between 4 000 and 6,0 0 names havu been placed on the Auckland electoral rollk. This would appear to indicate exceptional interest in uniters political; but, on the other hand,' it is openly asserted in town that roll-stuffing Is being resorted to on an extensive scale. Even the Registration Officer expresses his fear that many of the claims are net genuine, but he has done all in his power to prevent bogus claims king admitted, The rolls will not he open to objection before tho elections, and consequently persons now logistcrcd will have tno right to vote. Between 100 and 160 claims arc still being received daily. ' ■ Tho Royal Comic Opera Company sail for Sydney to-day, after a most successful season here. Mr A, S. WELLINGTON, June 28. A gang of iniioroinf.B appear to be making a tour r f the wine merchants’ establlshm nts. A few weeks ago U'Dongall nod Co.’s stores were enteral, chairs sec round, tho best vaults broached, everything (unbind about, and a rojular Jollification evidently indulged in between Saturday night and Mond.y morning. This morning the wine vaults of Mr Lahman, in Manners street, were found to bo on fire at an early hour, but tho fire was speedily extinguished. It was then found that some cases had be n broached, bottles opened, and glasses used, and there was every sign of n debauoh during the night, winding up with a deliberate attempt to set the place on fire.
