MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. LONDON, June 24. Consols are at 101 J. New Zealand Government securities are unchanged. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,730,000 quarters, or 10,000 quarters less than last week, The wheat afloat for the Continent is 730,000 quarters. Adelaide wheat is at 35s 6d; Adelaide flour, 6d lower—viz., 355. New Zealand wheat—lowest qualities 345, highest qualities Is lower, viz., 365. Scotch pig iron is la higher, at 455. LONDON, Junk 25. Australian beef tallow (average quality) is at 22s Gd; mutton, 275. New Zealand prime mutton is selling at 3fd to 4d.

The Australian Town and Country Land and Mortgage Company, with a capital of a million, is announced, and the first call upon the shareholders will be half a million. An influential directorate has been elected.

It is stated that a shipment of war munitions has been sent from San Francisco to Honolulu.

The Russian Government will shortly commence the construction of a railway from Siberia towards the North Pacific Ocean, the work to be completed in five years. The wheat market is inactive, and there is a tendency among buyers to favor cargoes on the spot. Australian cargoes on the spot are 6d lower than last rates, and off-coast cargoes are unchanged. Two cargoes have been sold for shipment for America, but the principal sales have been for the Continent. The weather lately has ben very cold, but there has been no rain.

Considerable comment has been occasioned by a statement published in the ' Citizen' that the Queen intends to apply to Parliament for a reimbursement of the Jubilee expenses.

The Government arc considering the offer of the Canadian Pacific Company to establish three steamer services from Vancouver to Australia, China, and India. The subsidy asked is L 50.000.

Admiral Erskine, late commander of the Australian station, is dead. Newsbury and Vautin's chlorine process of extracting gold from ores has been patented, and a company, with a capital of L 30.000, is being formed to work it. The Gympie Great Eastern Mining Company is being privately floated with a capital of L 210,000. Tho Australian Town and Country Mortgage Company has been floated with a capital of L1,00>,000. Mrs Clifton, formerly well known in theatrical circles as Fanny Sara, died to-day after a short illness. She was one of the most popular vocalists in Invercargill, and was greatly respected.
