LICENSING COMMITTEES' VAGARIES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—The decision of the Licensing Committee yesterday has excited general comment and surprise in the community. I say advisedly it has done so, for in discussing the decision of the Committee I have not met an individual who does not feel that a great mistake, or something worse, has been perpetrated. To all those who know Mr Gourley and his record, his action in thisSnatter is no surprise; but from Mr Stanfovd, a gentleman whose chief employment is to mould public opinion, this decision of his (bearing in mind his past and present profession) is unaccountable to tho uninitiated to which I and those I have met belong. The gentlemen who select the candidates for the Moderate Party will make a great mistake if they select either of these gentlemen again. This increase of licenses in a neighborhood with already too many hotels will tend to increase illegal trading. If a Moderate Committeo is to be returned another ysar, only moderate men must be chosen, which the actions of the Committee this year prove them not to be. —r am, etc. South Ward. Dunedin, June 21.
