THE INDIAN AND COLONIAL EXHIBITION.

The following correspondence has passed between the manager of theMosgicl Woollen Factory and tho Government Dunedin, 27th May, 1887. Sir,—l have the honor, on behalf of my company, to ask for a copy of the experts’ report upon the woollen goods sent by this Company, at the very urgent request of the Government Commissioner, Sir Julius von Haast, to the Colonial and Indian Exhibition. Almost the only inducement, outside lhat of the credit of the Colony, to send an exhibit at a_ considerable cost, and without hope of ultimate profit or reward, was the promise by the Commissioner that our goods would be examined carefully and reported upon officially by disinterested and first-class experts at Home, to your Government. We have been waiting in expectation to see or hear something of this report for some time, but are now surprised to see a statement in the ‘Otago Daily Times’ of to-day, from their Wellington correspondent, professing to explain its absence, viz., “That instructions were given to the experts to ignore all exhibits of colonial manufacture that could be brought into competition with similar articles of Home manufacture.” If this is a correct explanation of the absence of the promised official report, then I consider a very great injustice has been done to my company and others who exhibited woollens at the Exhibition, and, if true, would ask if your Government intend to allow the matter to rest as at present. It shows a protective care of the Home manufacturers’ interests that no one ever expected to see exercised by the parties controlling the Colonial Exhibition.—l have, etc., J. H. Morrison.

Wellington, June 4, 1887. Dear Sir,—Sir Robert Stout has referred to mo your letter of May 27- I urn as annoyed as you are that no expert reports were made upon the manufactures in the Exhibition. I have a few copies sent out, one of which I forward to you, which I hope you will do me the honor to accept,—l am, etc,, Julius Vogel.
