VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
On the occasion of his visit here Colonel Sargood, in the coarse of an address to the High School Cadets, held out the hope that at no distant date a rifle competition would take place between that corps and the cadets of the Scotch College at Melbourne. The only obstacle to this competition was the fact that the boys of the Victorian school ace armed with a different stamp of weapon from our own cadets; but this difficulty has now been removed, Colonel Sargood having, without expense to the corps, sent over a number of rifles of the type used in Victoria, along with 1,000 rounds of ammunition. The matter of the competition, too, has been taken up by other Victorian schools besides the Scotch College, and so it is probable that the High School Cadets will have to try their prowess against five or six
companies of Victorian cadets. We believe that no competition has as yet . taken P* ace between the cadets of Victoria and -New Zealand, and it is to be hoped that the cadets will distinguish themselves in this as in other branches of exercise, and will uphold the honor of their school and Colony.
