FLOGGING IN THE GAOLS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l was glad to sec “Rachel” to the front again using her cudgel in defence of suffering humanity. Now, I can assure you I do not know Warder Corrigan from Adam, but if it be true that he was dismissed for refusing to flog a boy I say it is a burning shame. I hope when Sir Robert Stout comes to Dunedin he will see that this man is reinstated. I should like to know the nature of the punishment. Is It merely birching, or is it the cruel lash ? I have no objection to bad men being lashed, as I am sure that there are many who have never been in gaol who richly deserve a good thrashing ; but, sir, I can feel for a poor boy vv ithout a friend in the world. I am sure that cxWardcr Corrigan has tho sympathy of ninetenths of the community.—l am, etc., A Mother. Dunedin, June 13.
