FATAL BOAT ACCIDENT.

News has been received at Gisborne of a Slid accident, at Tologa Bay.. A boat, with Mrs Kirk and three children as passengers, was landing from the s.s. Australia, when it capsized. Another boat from shore went to the rescue, and this boat also capsized and the occupants were drowned, They were Constable Stagpoole, two Natives, and Mr J. J, James. A telegram received in Wellington yesterday morning by Mr Stagpoole, father of the supposed drowned man, states that it is believed he was picked up by the steamer Australia. Stagpoole is known to be a strong swimmer. SIX LIVES LOST. GIieORNE, June 13. , The Australia arrived in the bay at 4.30 p.m, , A boat put off from the land containing five persons—Glover, Rawiri, Tautau, Rapalna Hautau, and Harry Hautau, who arrived safely along the steamer. Four passengers—Mrs Kirk, Nellie Kirk (aged nine), Ralph Kirk (aged two), and an infant (one month old)—gotinto.the boat, and when near the bar, she was seen to founder, throwing the occupants into the water. Glover got safely ashore, and was followed by Rawiri fl,nd Tautau, both of them being much exhausted, Rapaina disappeared. The accident was seen from the beach, and Constable Stagpoole, Joseph James (a bootmaker), and Sam Giernman (a Maori), went to the rescue, but while in the aot of saving the occupants of the first boit’their own boat was swamped, Gierman got safely ashore, but it is supposed that Stagpoole drifted to sea. The steamer threw two rockets, blew her horn, and remained in the bay till morning, hoisting two flags and still blowing her horn. After steaming up and down the bay, as if anxious to communicate with the land, she steamed North at about 8 a.m, It turns out that James was drowned, but it is supposed that Stagpoole and the Native Tautau are on the steamer, though that is by no means certain. The bar did not appear rough at the time. A fresh search party went out yesterday, and before nightfall found the bodies of Joseph James, Ralph and Nellie Kirk, and the baby one month old, and Rapiana Tautau.
