Loss of a Pocket-book Containing £I,OOO.
The' Argus' reports that Mr W. Sykes, a farmer residing at Dandenong, recently received two cheques from Messrs Campbell, Pratt, and Co., cattle salesmen, for L 990 and LlO respectively. He cashed the larger one at the Colonial Bank at the turner of Elizabeth and Little Collins streets, rei ceiving nine LlOft notes, three LW notes, and the remainder in smaller notes. He sat down at one of the tables in the bankingroom to count the money, and afterwards : placed both the money and the eheqae In a> pocket-book. He then, to the beat of hia recollection, as he states, put the pocketbook into the breast pocket of his coat. B* left the bank and had reached the General Post Office, when he fonnd the pocket-book was not in his possession. He imagdiately returned to the bank,, but nothing bid been seen of the book there, and it was not on the table where he had counted his moaej. He has come to the conclusion that the books was stolen from his pocket, and; has gives* information to the detective police. Hestates that he- noticed a man with a note in, his hand standing near him, and a littlft apart from the other customers in the bank, whilst he was counting his money, bat hasno other reason to connect the man with th* disappearance of the pocket-book. Besktea the money, the pocket-book contained a% Passage ticket from Melbourne to London y the Sorata, and some letters and papers.
