POLLUTION OF THE LEITH.

I ' TO THB EDITOR. Sir,—Mr Davidson tries to get out of the position he has put himself in- by miserable subterfuges. He now says that the sawdusr, instead of being put into the Leith, is still in the same place outside the mill I will give. LlO to the Benevolent Institution if he wnl prove that he did not wheel the heap of sawdust from beside his mill and tip it over tne bank into the Leith. He further say's, regarding receiving LfiO last year, "I donotreceiveorie farthing." Now I find that he received L6O from the City Corporation for' keeping his sawdust out of 'the Leith last year (for which vouchers can be seen at the office), and it was hot his fault that he did not receive as large an amount, if not more, this year, as there is a document in the Town Clerk's office, bearing Mr Davidson's signature, whioh says that he will keep the sawdust out of the Leith for Lls the first week, and LlO for every following week that the Corporation take the water—a work which tl 'am bound to say would not 'have taken above ja few shillings a week to do.' That is the kind <jf gentleman who tries to accommodate the Corporation all he can, even if he had the right to put it in. ! I am quite prepared to swear to any- statements that.l have made. I will conclude with a poetical quotation— ' v ' » tg've fifth joy that's awkward at a lie; ! Whose feeWo nature truth still keeps in awe— < ' His lnoapaoi'y Is bis renown. " > —lam, etc., WraoAMDawsoh, Dunedin, April2B. , ; ;\\
