FOOTBALL.

The match played by the Dunedin Clnb on Saturday afternoon was a picked fifteen v. the next twenty-five, and, after a hard struggle, the former won by a goal and a try to one goal. The first score was gained by the twenty-five, Driver getting over the line. The try was converted into a goal. Shortly after half-time Martin, the skipper of the fifteen, was the next to score, his try being also converted into a goal. Harper also obtained a try. Cook and Butterwqrth, Austin and Murray played well as backs, and of the forwards the majority worked hard for their respective sides. Martin, Mills, Turton, G. Turnbull, R. Gillies, and Jackman were about the best of the fifteen. Mills seems to be in better form than he was last season. On the other side Carter, Driver, and M'Adam were frequently prominent. Baldwin, J. Martin, Mitchell, and Stokes also did good work. Judging from the play on Saturday, a fairly good first fifteen and an unusually good second fifteen are likely to be obtained from the Club's ranks this season. Among the absentees were Smith, Branigan, Le Cren, Malcolm, and W. Murray. Members are invited to practise on the Caledonian Ground teyery evening. ~ •. Leith (who collared and drihbled in grand style), Tattersall, • and Twiname (who is Uaving for Auckland, where he joins the Graftons) came next. Gregory (whose kicking and collaring were much admired), Noel, Aitken, and E. Twiname were the best of the backs. The Alhambra Club played a match on Saturday Probable Backs and Second Fowards v. A. Miller and Sonntag each obtained a try, and Keogh kicked a good goal from one of them. Time being called left the Fifteen winners by one goal and four tries (7 points) to one goal (3 points). Besides tho abovenamed players R. Miller and W. Ray also played well. _ The Association game is to be played in Auckland, the Rev. J. S. Hill having succeeded in forming a club. Complaint is made of the brutal character of the Rugby game. -
