Sir F. Abel delivered a lecture yesterday on the Imperial Institute; the Prince of Wales in the chair. The lecturer gave full details and explanations of the objects of the scheme.

Tho ' Standard' publishes a scathing denunciation of the manner in which the Institute has been advocated, and asserts that the approval of Her Majesty has been nullified by the want of confidence'which the public evince in the management. An assurance of the honesty of the scheme, apart from those who have it now in hand, would, according to the 'Standard,' at once restore public confidence, and lead to a deluge of donations, South Australian stocks have fallen 1 per cent.

Nova Scotia is again discussing the question of seceding from the Dominion of Canada. Postmaster - General Raikes announces that England will credit the colonies with L 50.000 on account of the postage receipts for 18S6, from the revenue accruing to Great Britain from the Indian and Australian mails. France is credited with L 54,000 as her proportionate share from the same source, and Italy with L 44.000.

women in distress in this Colony. The Mayor, in reply, has promised his hearty co-operation. Lady Loch has also written to the Governors of New South Wales and other colonies suggesting the raising of funds for a similar purpose in each Colony.

AUCKLAND, April 25.

A fit teen-roomed house at North Shore, owned and opcupiert 'by Mr James 1 Caldwell, was destroyed by fire last night. The sup-, posed cause was the bursting of a kerosene lamp which had been left alight. All the household were absent; but they had not been long away when Mrs Thompson, living next door, observed a flash through the window, followed by a loud report evidently caused by the explosion of a kerosene lamp in the dining-room. In a remarkably short space of time the fire had broken through the lower portion of the building, and travelled with amazing rapidity. The damage done exceeds the insurance, which was LBOO on the furniture and L 550 on the house, both in the Royal office. . '

Thomas M !Callum was arrested yesterday charged with indecently assaulting a girl at Northcote. Be appeared at the Police Court to-day and was remanded for a week, bail being allowed.

CHRISTCHURCH, April 25. " Captain Daniel M'lntyre,. formerly commander of the ship Chrysolite and latterly of the steamer Wellington, died in Lyttelton of scarlet fever. H e was sixty years of age. Scarlet and typhoid ieyer are very prevalent in Lyttelton just now.
