CITY POLICE COURT.

Saturday, April 16.

(Before Messrs J. Ashcroft, D. BrOnt, and W. Hutchison, J.P.s.)

Drunkenness. Alexander Rac was convicted and discharged. Ellen Delaney was fined 20s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Alleged Stealing from the Person. Miii-ii Harris was charged with stealing LI 18s from Denis Lynch, in Foundry lane, Great King street, last evening.—The case was dismissed. Larceny. —Thomas Barrett was charged with stealing a blanket, saddle, and harness, of the value of 30s, boknging to John Bowie, of King street; and also a collar and harness, of the value of 20s, belonging to James Casey, of Leith avenue. —On the application of Mr Gallaway, the accused was remanded till next Wednesday, bad being allowed in his own recognisance for LlO, and two sureties for LlO each.

Breaches of the City By-laws.— August Dornwcll, for leaving a cart unattended, was fined LI and costs; Robinson Bcntham, for obstructing a footpath, was fined ss, without costs; and George Burgess, for not causing a sufficient light to bo placed upon material in Lees street, was fined Is, without costs. Matthew Dormer, the owner of four cows found wandering on the Belt, was fined ss, without costs.

Bad Language. John Jamieson was charged with using insulting words in King street on the 14th inst. The accused did not appear.—Police-sergeant Mulville deposed that early on the morning of the 14th his attention was called to a crowd which was assembled in front of the National Hotel. He found the accused, who is blind and lame, sitting on a perambulator and using most insulting language to a number of people. He kept up his shouting for a considerable time. The accused was a gn at nuisance to the neighborhood. In answer to the Bench Inspector Moore said that accused received money from the Benevolent Institution, and also got alms in the street,—The accused was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Margaret Smith pleaded guilty to a charge of making use of obscene language in Hanover street on the 15th inst. Mr D. M. Stuart appeared for the accused, and suggested that she should be given the opportunity of leaving this City to go to Auckland where her friends resided.—The Bench said that they could not lo A over the offence, and sentenced the accused to a month’s imprisonment.
