ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

A Maori was drowned in Lake Rotokauri on Wednesday while crossing in a "Tforee Morgan, who last week drifted awav from the Bluff in a boat, with a mate named Connor, had a wonderful escape. They had onlv on«' oar, and the craft was practically at "tlv n..>roy of tin- waves. It drifted along tho count, all night, and on Saturday afternoon was opposite Slop* Point, about three miles from the lighthouse erected after the wreck of the Tararua in 1851. The surf, even in fine weather, breaks heavily, and landing is extremely hazardous. The men, however, determined to try to reach the shore, and success appeared likely to crown their efforts, when the boat was capsized by a wave. Morgan was underneath, but a succeeding wave threw the boat further upon the beach, and released the struggling man from his dangerous position. He then looked about, but saw no trace of his unfortunate mate, who must have been carried to sea. Morgan reached a miner's house, and had his wants attended to. , Renata Tongato, a Native clergyman died at Mongonui on Thursday from the effects of the tinned meat he ate at Archdeacon Clarke's residence at Auckland on Sunday. c Patrick O'Donnell, Beven years of age, was killed at New Plymouth on Thursday afternoon by a loaded timber waggon passing over him. , . ~ George Schmidt, one of the crew of the Wakatipu, met with a Berious accident at Timaruon Wednesday evening. While engaged in clearing away the mooring chains he got bis leg jammed among the running chain, which smashed the bone, muscle, and flesh between the knee and ankle almost to a pulp.
