The initiation of a Government Labor Exchange in connection with the Immigration Department was first advocated in the House of Representatives by the Hon. W. H. Reynolds seven years ago, but was not approved of at the time. Recently Mr Reynolds addressed a memo, on the subject to the Cabinet, and it was unanimously resolved to try the experiment in Otago and Southland, A Board _of Advice was accordingly formed, consisting of the District Engineer, the Immigration Officer, the Government Auctioneer, together with Dr Hislop and Mr John Looan, and Mr Reynolds came down to Dunedin for the express purpose of initiating the Exchange, which it is anticipated will absorb all the deserving unemployed, and will relieve the Government of the pressure of the unemployed cry. The police have been instructed to facilitate the Board in every way in carrying out their duties. Canterbury is anxious to have a Government labor exchange established on similar lines to that recently started here, and the Hon. Mr Reynolds has received several requests to visit Christchurch and initiate the Exchange there. He is, however, desirous of seeing how the experiment answers in Otago and Southland before extending its operations to other parts of the Colony.
